Pig-headed unions standing in the way of progress once again. Fire 'em all, then offer the chance to re-apply with a big pay cut. Most all will eagerly come back. They'll not find better jobs.
If the union challenges the firing in the courts or hinders the firing somehow, then declare bankruptcy, wipe the slate clean, then rehire.
The only ones I have sympathy for here are patrol officers who have to walk up to cars and nutcases and run a very real risk of getting shot or attacked. They deserve all the money they get. But police desk jockeys and firefighters, forget it!
Notwithstanding the flukey event of 9/11, firefighters have a VERY safe job, because they manage risk rigorously. They have fantastic hours and get paid to work out. Get real. As far as 9/11 goes, the firefighters would NEVER have gone into the building if they thought it might collapse. Watch the documentaries: it never crossed their minds that the twin towers might collapse. They don't take crazy risks, period.
Cops lost huge credibility with me because they pad their pay in their last year before retirement so they can bloat their pensions. They're being morally spineless, and they know it, and they don't care. Lazy freeloaders.
