Diagnosing Gerry Woerlee

Post to a Gerry Woerlee-related thread on Amazon

Gerry: You're all-but-hopeless. You have some sort of odd mental illness with which you still remain very high-functioning -- and you refuse to face it. I have worked in the mental health field for 28 years, and you remind me of very accomplished and highly functional paranoid schizophrenics having intricately crafted, highly sophisticated belief systems made up of valid individual facts -- or at least non-disprovable assertions -- but whose belief systems, when viewed in aggregate, are patently bizarre. These folks are nearly impossible to treat because they focus only on the individual facts and non-disprovable assertions, and utterly refuse to look the facts and assertions in aggregate, which is where the craziness manifests itself. Every time your back is to the wall with a sequence of logic, or with certain pieces of evidence that compel you to look at the big picture, you instead turn around and direct your attention at some COMPONENT of the preposterous big picture you have constructed, or some non-germane aspect of the subject at hand, rather than the big picture itself. By doing this, you are able to avoid experiencing some sort of devastating, unpleasant truth. It's like an OCD case who blocks a highly distressing memory or emotional state by continually washing his/her hands or flipping light switches, etc. I am giving you up for lost. The only person who can save you is you.
