I am supposing that part of the Chinese government's motivation in filtering information is to save face.

What they would profit from realizing is that their incomplete and transparent attempts at fig leafing verbal manifestations of already existing mass-thought makes them look, at least to my eyes (and certainly, at least, to a few others') silly and inept, like a goofy schoolteacher failing to control his class and becoming a laughingstock.
