The point isn't to slam Linus Pauling. It is to establish that greatness in one area often goes along with ineptitude in another area.
This is no surprise, and shouldn't make us doubt the greatness of less-than-consistently stellar individuals.
This is good to bear in mind when evaluating guru types -- and clergy in general.
A huge requirement by many that they be 100% right and squeaky clean morally can cause the throwing out of the baby with the bathwater. This is particularly important when evaluating spiritual personages, who may have a strong grip on the "monkey bars"of elevated spiritual ex0perience, but have a poor handle on other things.
