California has gotten 15% of its energy from nuclear plants for years. Nothing bad has happened from that.

Nuclear energy is safe. Chernobyl occurred from the equivalent of a Model-T Ford being run with all the safety systems turned off. Three Mile Island happened because the operators deliberately turned the safety systems off.

Modern nuke plants have nearly zero chance of melting down. You are in far more danger of dying from flying on a modern jet airliner than you are from a nuclear plant running in your neighborhood.

Even in the worst-case of Chernobyl, perhaps 57 people died. (There are many scare-mongers and sincerely mistaken people who say that thousands dies from radiation poisoning from Chernobyl, but this doesn't take into account fatalistic citizens who would attribute ANY fatality to Chernobyl. Looked at through the lens of proper scientific skepticism, Chernobyl killed very few compared to what goes into the operation of coal-fired nuclear plants.)

Coal mines, which provide the fuel for coal-fired plants, kills thousands a year.

Burned coal is radioactive.

About 500,000 people have shortened life expectancies because of the massive pollution generated by their coal-fired nuclear power plants. (Per report released mid-November 2008.)

You get more radiation sleeping beside your partner than you get from sleeping beside a nuclear energy plant.

Nuclear waste is nearly 100% recyclable. France recycles theirs.

Nuclear energy generation is fantastically clean, and doesn't contribute to global warming. Moreover, it can be used to charge batteries in cars, reducing the need for gas and natural gas for vehicles.

On November 3, 2008, a crack in the edifice of nuclear nonsense appeared when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California came "out of the closet" in the Sacramento Bee and said that it's high time California started getting its energy from nukes. He said we can ship the wate out of the Port of Stockton (near the capital of Sacramento) to France for recycling.

The founder of Greenpeace, the guy who started Greenpeace by getting in a dinghy and challenging big whaling ships directly, has completely separated himself form the organization he founded, and has come out four-square on behalf of nuclear power.

The number one cause of carbon emissions (carbon emissions are thought to be the cause of global warming) is coal-fired energy plants.

California, in an effort to appear as though they are lowering carbon emissions, doesn't mention that they get much of their power from coal-fired energy plants from out of state.

This is duplicity, plain and simple. Duplicity is another word for lying.

Well-intended but ignorant members of the Sierra Club have no clue about what they are talking about when they badmouth nuclear energy. What's far worse is that unscrupulous - no, evil - lawyers LOVE the Sierra Club resisting nuclear energy because it keeps their pockets lined by fighting expensive lawsuits. By law, many lawsuits having to do with the environment are paid for by the taxpayers.
