thoughts on being a 9 or better:

A 9 or a 10 in my book -- especially a 10 -- can't just have the standard issue hourglass figure and cute face and acceptable personality.  Nines and 10s - especially 10s -- need  something that is sort of strange about their looks, but appealing, like Barbra Streisand's big nose and crossed eyes (in her prime)  (Of course, some will disagree that barbra was a 9/10, but you get the point -- you need something sort of odd and different  to be a all-flags-flying 10... I'm a hard grader that way)

Audrey Hepburn was getting pretty close to 10, but she lacked the strangeness factor.  Angelina Jolie's big lips start to qualify as potentially being an acceptable strangeness factor.  Some beauties have pristinely perfect looks, such as Penelope Cruz, or singer Faith Hill when she was young -- but lacking the strangeness factor, I can give them no more than a 9+ ).

I don't give out 10s lightly at all. It's like how getting into Harvard: a 4.2 GPA and dozens of standard-issue extracurriculars often doesn't cut it.  You have to have done something really different and special, like having started a charity in Darfur, etc.

Tens occupy only a most rarefied fraction of a percentile of the population.  Very rare, very rarefied. Four leaf clovers don't cut it.  Five leaf clovers do.

Thinking of guitar players as chicks, there are lots of blindingly fast virtuouso guitar players, such as Joe Satriani or John McLaughlin -- (yawn! can we say error-free "typists"?) -- but then there is Jimi Hendrix, who, in addition to being blindingly fast, also was strange and startingly original in a constructive way.
