Academic accomplishment can go hand in hand with terrible judgment

Extreme ability in a given area of academia is far from a guarantee of credibility in other areas.

Some very "whacked out" behavior and delusionality have come from some of the most exalted academics.

To a great extent, mathematics is like a glorified video game. Extraordinary skill in that area in no way confers good judgment or credibility in other areas.
